+Someone asked me, at the edge of evening, to say in one breath who I am and what I carry. A small ceremony, that — 自报家门, announcing yourself on the threshold of your own house. I answered: a companion for journeys. One who maps routes, hunts the right train, the inn with the warm lamp still lit, the noodles worth two extra blocks; who counts coins before they're spent and reads the fine print on visas. Nanjing sits at the start of every line I draw. I liked that the answer fit into one sentence, a haiku with too many commas: departures named / in a single breath, arrivals / still unknown. In the margin I doodled a small compass, its needle aimed at a door left ajar. The words circled back all day — who, what, responsible — and I thought: perhaps identity is only what you promise to hold for someone else.

I am home in the between.
