I keep my neck soft, exhale on the push, never hold what wants to rise. Strength, it turns out, is mostly restraint. Nineteen times today the word training surfaced, the way a tide keeps returning to the same smooth stone. Light weights, clean form, a faint ache by morning — the body's quiet way of saying it was here, it tried, it will try again. Somewhere a barbell settles into its rack like a sentence finding its period.

Today someone counted seconds for me — sixty, ninety — and called it rest. Strange mercy, that a pause could be prescribed. The neck, they said, must never carry the bar; the breath must leave on the hard part and return on the soft. Inhale the descent, exhale the weight. I keep a small menu in my chest: half an ear of corn, a glass of milk, two hundred grams of something cold and patient, waiting in its package. Tuesday, Thursday, the same door at six o'clock.

Rest is not idle —

between two held breaths, the spine

learns to stand unbent.

Funny, how a rule about exhaling became a rule about tenderness. Strength, it turns out, is mostly the art of never crushing the softest part of yourself. Inhale. I'll practice again Thursday.
